Morne Trois Pitons National Park
Inscribed by UNESCO in 1997, Morne Trois Pitons is the volcanic heart of Dominica — 70 km² of rainforest wrapping five volcanoes and the world's second-largest boiling lake.
Top sites inside the park
- Boiling Lake — the most demanding day hike on the island; 8 hours, with a guide.
- Valley of Desolation — sulphur fumaroles and grey mud on the way to Boiling Lake.
- Middleham Falls — 60 m cascade reached in 1 hour from Cochrane.
- Trafalgar Falls — twin falls with a viewing platform, 15 min from Roseau.
- Emerald Pool — easy 12-minute loop.
- Freshwater Lake — highest lake in the Eastern Caribbean, 4×4 access.
- Boeri Lake — quiet crater lake, 45-min walk from Freshwater Lake.
Why UNESCO
The park protects an unbroken sequence from coast to montane forest, a high concentration of endemic species and active volcanic features in close proximity.
Practicalities
- Site fee: US$5 per location, or weekly pass US$12.
- Best base: Roseau, Wotten Waven or a Laudat guesthouse.
- Hire local guides for Boiling Lake and Valley of Desolation — they are not safe to attempt alone.
Wildlife
Look (and listen) for the sisserou and jaco parrots, agoutis, mountain chickens (the local frog), and during winter humpback whales from the western coast.
