Waitukubuli National Trail: Overview & Best Sections
The Caribbean's only long-distance hiking trail — 14 segments crossing Dominica north to south.
Waitukubuli National Trail
The Waitukubuli (the Kalinago name for Dominica) is the Caribbean's first long-distance trail: 184 km in 14 segments running from Scotts Head in the south to Cabrits in the north. You can hike a single segment in a day or thru-hike in 12–14 days.
What makes it special
The trail strings together rainforest, plantation paths, ridge views, Kalinago territory and quiet coastal villages. You will meet farmers, cross rivers and see almost no other hikers off the famous parts.
Best segments for short trips
- Segment 4 — Bellevue Chopin → Wotten Waven. Easy farm and forest walking, ends at hot springs. 4–5 hrs.
- Segment 9 — Hatton Garden → First Camp. Climb through plantations into mountain forest with stunning Atlantic views. 6–7 hrs.
- Segment 12 — Penville → Capuchin. Spectacular north-coast cliffs, swimmable rivers. 5–6 hrs.
Practicalities
Buy a trail pass (US$12/week) which funds maintenance. The official guidebook + GPX is essential — signage is patchy after storms. Hire a local guide for thru-hikes.
When to go
December–April. Avoid July–October (storms can wash out sections).
