Sperm Whale Watching in Dominica

The world's only year-round sperm whale destination — what to expect on a tour.

Sperm Whale Watching in Dominica

Dominica is the only country in the world with a resident, year-round population of female and juvenile sperm whales feeding on the deep-water squid that rise from a 1,000 m drop just offshore.

Why here

The west coast plunges into the Caribbean basin within 1 km of shore. Female-led "units" of sperm whales spend most of their lives in this small stretch — researchers from the Dominica Sperm Whale Project have studied many of them since the 1980s.

Tour basics

  • Boats leave from Roseau or Castle Comfort.
  • Trips are 3–4 hours, US$95 per person, max 12 passengers.
  • Hydrophones are used to listen for the whales' clicks; you locate animals by sound first.
  • Most days you watch from the boat as whales surface to breathe.
  • Swimming with whales is now subject to a strict permit system — check operator credentials carefully.

Best season

November to April is the calmest sea state and the highest sighting rate. Some operators run year-round but conditions are rougher in summer.

Recommended operators

  • Dive Dominica
  • Anchorage Whale Watch
  • Aldive

All work with researchers, follow distance rules and contribute data to the long-term study. Avoid any tour that promises guaranteed in-water encounters — that is not legal under current regulations.
