A Walking Tour of Roseau
Self-guided two-hour walk through Dominica's capital — markets, French Quarter, botanical gardens.
A Walking Tour of Roseau
Roseau is small enough to cover in a morning. Start at the cruise terminal and end at the Botanical Gardens.
Stop 1 — Old Market & Dominica Museum
The cobbled square where slaves were sold is now full of craft stalls. The Dominica Museum opposite (US$3) gives a quick overview of Kalinago, French and British history.
Stop 2 — French Quarter
Walk inland up Castle Street and Old Street. Look for gingerbread fretwork houses with overhanging balconies — a French Quarter signature. Many are battered by storms but still beautifully detailed.
Stop 3 — Roseau Public Market
Best on Saturday morning. Vendors sell produce, river fish, bay leaves, fresh juice and bois bandé bark. Try a saltfish bake from any of the food stalls.
Stop 4 — Bay Front
Stroll the seafront promenade and rebuilt cruise pier. The yellow Roseau Cathedral (1730s) is the oldest stone church in the West Indies.
Stop 5 — Botanical Gardens
The 16-hectare gardens hold a famously crushed school bus — a 1979 Hurricane David relic kept as a memorial — and the cages of recovering sisserou and jaco parrots.
Eat
Try Pearl's Cuisine for callaloo soup, Ancient Capitol for creole goat, and any of the food vans on Bay Front for evening BBQ chicken.
