Intro
Segment 4 is a demanding point-to-point day between Wotten Waven and Pont Cassé. It’s known for being very wet underfoot, with a large elevation gain and beautiful viewpoints on clear days. The route is generally easy to follow up to the Middleham junction, then it becomes more technical and slower.
Quick facts
- Difficulty: 7/10
- Duration: About 5–6 hours (often longer if wet or if crossings slow you down)
- Cost: Unknown
What you’ll do
- Start in Wotten Waven and follow the WNT route toward the high interior ridges.
- Stay on the main line up to the Middleham intersection (this part is usually straightforward).
- Continue past Middleham on steeper, muddier terrain with tougher footing.
- Use rope sections where needed on steep drops/climbs.
- Navigate river-bed crossings near the end and re-locate the trail before finishing at Pont Cassé.
Key tips
- This segment is often very wet and slippery. Expect mud, roots, and slick rock.
- After Middleham, the pace slows. Plan extra time for steep sections and ropes.
- One bridge may be out near the end. Be ready to drop into the river bed and find the exit trail again.
- Start early and keep a daylight buffer.
- Carry an offline GPS track. Don’t rely on paint markers alone.
We haven’t explored the full Waitukubuli National Trail yet. A full end-to- end outing is planned during 2026 so we can update our on-the-ground notes (conditions, access, real timings). If you want to prepare an expedition for one segment or multiple segments, please fill out our form and we’ll connect you with guides based on the sections you want to do.
