A rocky peninsula at Dominica’s southern tip with some of the island’s best snorkeling on the Caribbean side and dramatic “Atlantic meets Caribbean” views.

Intro

At the extreme south of the island, Scott's Head sits on a thin peninsula where the Atlantic meets the Caribbean. The shoreline is mostly rocky, but the Caribbean side is one of Dominica's best snorkeling spots. Clear water, coral, and tropical fish make it a top stop if you're comfortable in the sea, and a short climb above it opens the whole of Soufriere Bay.

What you'll do

  • Choose the Caribbean side for snorkeling in calmer-looking water.
  • Enter carefully from rockier areas and take your time finding the best visibility.
  • Explore the reef zones close to the point (only if conditions feel safe).
  • Hike up the peninsula to the viewpoint. About 15 minutes, paved as far as the cannon landing, then steps and a rocky path to the top.
  • From up there you get the whole of Soufriere Bay, the village, and Martinique on a clear day. The bay reads that deep blue because it is a flooded volcanic crater, and the reef you snorkel runs along its rim.
  • Optional adventure: round the tip to reach a small hidden beach and explore sea caves.

Key tips

  • Currents can change fast near the point. Do not push past your comfort level.
  • Watch for scorpionfish among the rocks and sea urchins on the shallow bottom. Wear water shoes and step carefully.
  • The climb is short but exposed. Go early or late, and carry water.
  • Avoid rough seas, strong wind, or big swell days.
  • Bring a mask and snorkel, and keep your phone in a dry bag if you carry it.
  • If the water looks cloudy or choppy, switch to a simple viewpoint visit instead of snorkeling.

Safety

Watch for currents and waves, especially near the point. Stonefish can hide among rocks. Wear water shoes and step carefully.
