Hike

Dominica’s iconic volcanic lake, reached by a demanding hike through Morne Nicholls and the Valley of Desolation, with steaming vents, hot streams, and a dramatic crater lake at the end. A licensed guide is mandatory.

Boiling Lake is one of Dominica’s most demanding and rewarding hikes, best suited to people looking for a full endurance day. Set inside a volcanic crater, it is often described as the world’s second-largest boiling lake. The route takes you from rainforest to cloud forest, across Morne Nicholls, and down into the surreal Valley of Desolation.

Quick facts

  • Difficulty: 7/10
  • Duration: 6–8 hours
  • Cost: Government user fee applies. Guide prices typically start around US$60 per person.

What you’ll do

  • Start from the Laudat area and hike through dense rainforest.
  • Climb into cloud forest and reach the Morne Nicholls section.
  • Descend into the Valley of Desolation, with steaming vents and hot streams.
  • Follow the route carefully through the valley, where people can lose the trail.

  • Return the same way, taking extra care on the descent.

Key tips

  • A licensed guide is mandatory.
  • Do not start after 9:00 AM.
  • Stay on the trail in the Valley of Desolation. Ground and water can be dangerously hot.
  • Expect mud and slippery footing. Shoes with strong grip matter.
  • Bring more water and snacks than you think you need, and pace yourself.

Best time

Start early and avoid setting off late in the morning. Choose a clear, drier day for safer footing and better views.

What to bring

Shoes with strong grip, plenty of water, snacks, a rain layer, a dry bag, long pants, optional trekking poles, and an offline map app.

How to get there

The trail starts in the Laudat area, near Titou Gorge. Use your preferred confirmed GPS pin to reach the Boiling Lake trailhead.

Safety

This is a very demanding hike with mud, steep sections, and exposed geothermal areas in the Valley of Desolation. Stay on the trail, watch your footing near hot streams and vents, and avoid attempting it in poor weather.
