Getting Around Dominica: Buses, Cars & Taxis
Public minibuses, rental cars, taxis and water taxis — how to move between Roseau, Portsmouth and the rainforest.
Getting Around Dominica
Distances are short on Dominica but roads twist through mountainous terrain — give yourself more time than the map suggests.
Public minibuses
Cheap and authentic. Identifiable by an "H" or "HA" on the licence plate. Run frequently between Roseau, Portsmouth, Marigot and Castle Bruce until early evening. Flag them down anywhere; pay in EC dollars on board.
Rental cars
Best option for travellers who want to reach trailheads and beaches on their own schedule. You will need a local driving permit (~US$12), issued at the rental desk on showing your home licence. Drive on the left. 4×4 is recommended for the east coast and dirt roads to remote spots.
Taxis
Plate prefix "H" or "HA" same as buses but agree on a price before getting in. Roseau ↔ Douglas-Charles airport ≈ US$80. See approved rates here : https://cdn.discoverdominica.com/production/20200925185925-airport-rates.pdf
Water taxis
Connect Portsmouth with the Indian River entrance and a few northern beaches. The most scenic ride is dawn from Portsmouth across Prince Rupert Bay.
Walking and cycling
Roseau is compact and walkable. Cycling is mostly for fit riders — gradients are serious.
Inter-island ferry
L'Express des Îles runs from Roseau to Guadeloupe, Martinique and Saint Lucia.
