Cocoa Farm Tours in Dominica

Cocoa was once a major Dominican export and is enjoying a quiet revival, led by small family farms producing fine-flavour beans for craft chocolate makers in Europe.

Why Dominican cocoa

The volcanic soils and shaded rainforest give the beans complex floral and citrus notes. Most farms grow the prized Trinitario variety alongside heritage Criollo trees.

Where to visit

  • Pointe Baptiste Estate (Calibishie) — historic 19th-century estate, full bean-to-bar tour with tasting (~US$25). Also makes its own chocolate bars.
  • Bois Cotlette (Soufrière) — the oldest plantation on the island (1720s), eco-restored, runs immersive guided walks combining cocoa, coffee and rainforest history.
  • Wotten Waven cocoa cooperative — short drop-in tours; combine with the hot springs.

What you'll see

  • The pods on the trunk (cauliflorous fruiting)
  • Hand-cracking and wet-sweat fermentation in cedar boxes
  • Sun-drying on wooden trays
  • Roasting and winnowing
  • Tasting paste, nibs, and finished single-origin bars

Bring home

Pointe Baptiste and Pinto Cocoa bars travel well and make excellent gifts. The bean prices fluctuate so visiting at harvest (December–March) is a treat.
