The Best Rums of Dominica
Dominica may be smaller than its rum-famous neighbours, but it has its own heritage of cane-juice and molasses rums, plus a strong tradition of bush-rum infusions.
The two distilleries
- Macoucherie Estate (Salisbury, west coast) — the only working sugar-cane juice distillery in the Eastern Caribbean. Their flagship Macoucherie Rhum Agricole is grassy and fruity. Tours run by appointment, US$15.
- Belfast Estate / Shillingford Distillery (Belfast, near Roseau) — molasses-based rums, the best known being Soca and Sun Set strong rums.
Bush rums to try
Almost every village shop will pour you a spice rum steeped in cinnamon, anise, cloves and lapsiwèt bark. Variants include:
- Bois bandé rum — bark infusion, the famous "bedroom" rum.
- Mauby rum — bitter bark and spice.
- Cocoa rum — sweet, ideal nightcap.
Where to taste
- Macoucherie tasting room at the distillery.
- Cocorico Café (Roseau) — flight of local rums and rhum agricole cocktails.
- A Sunday rum shop anywhere — best with a domino game in progress.
Cocktails to order
- Ti punch — agricole, lime, cane syrup. The classic.
- Painkiller — pineapple, orange, coconut, dark rum. Beach essential.
- Spice rum punch — bush rum cut with passion fruit and lime.
