Intro
Segment 8 is one of the toughest parts of the Waitukubuli National Trail.
You start from First Camp (bush camping) and hike west through remote forest, rivers, and Mosquito Mountain before descending to Petite Macoucherie on Cuba Road.
Most hikers plan it as part of the Segment 7–8 island crossing, since Segment 7 ends at First Camp.
Quick facts
- Difficulty: 9/10
- Duration: 6 hours
What you’ll do
- Start from First Camp and enter deep forest terrain.
- Climb and traverse around Mosquito Mountain.
- Cross rivers and move carefully on wet, slow sections.
- Catch east + west panoramic views when the weather opens up.
- Descend toward Petite Macoucherie on Cuba Road and finish the segment there.
Key tips
- Plan Segment 7 + 8 together. You’ll camp at First Camp between the two days.
- Start Segment 7 with enough water/food to cover two hiking days (Segment 7 + Segment 8), plus an emergency buffer.
- Start early from First Camp and keep a daylight buffer.
- Expect river crossings and slick ground, especially during rain.
- Carry an offline GPS track. Do not rely on paint markers alone.
- Info varies a lot from one year/season to the next (weather, washouts, overgrowth). We’ll update this page as soon as possible.
- Logistics: Petite Macoucherie is on Cuba Road. You can continue down this road to reach Mero for amenities.
- Direction note: we do not recommend attempting this segment “the wrong way” (west → east). Plan it in the standard direction starting from First Camp.
We haven’t explored the full Waitukubuli National Trail yet. A full end-to-end outing is planned during 2026 so we can update our on-the-ground notes (conditions, access, real timings). If you want to prepare an expedition for one segment or multiple segments, please fill out our form and we’ll connect you with guides based on the sections you want to do.
