Intro
Segment 7 runs from Hatton Garden to First Camp, a bush camping spot above the northeast side.
This is not a “day hike” you casually finish in a village: Segment 7 ends at camp, and you’ll need to continue with Segment 8 to reach the next exit point.
Together, Segments 7 and 8 can be planned as a west–east island crossing hike.
Quick facts
- Difficulty: 7/10
- Duration: 6-7 hours
What you’ll do
- Start from Hatton Garden and follow the WNT route through farm areas and forest.
- Climb gradually, then deal with rolling ups and downs.
- Cross river sections and take breaks where the terrain opens up.
- Reach First Camp and set up for the night.
- Continue on Segment 8 the next day to reach the next exit point.
Key tips
- Plan this as a 2-day crossing (Segment 7 + Segment 8), not a single-day outing.
- Start Segment 7 with enough water/food to cover two hiking days (Segments 7 + 8), plus an emergency buffer.
- Aim to reach First Camp with daylight left for setting up camp.
- Expect wet ground and slippery footing, especially after rain.
- Use an offline GPS track. Missed turns can cost time and daylight.
We haven’t explored the full Waitukubuli National Trail yet. A full end-to-end outing is planned during 2026 so we can update our on-the-ground notes (conditions, access, real timings). If you want to prepare an expedition for one segment or multiple segments, please fill out our form and we’ll connect you with guides based on the sections you want to do.
