Intro
Segment 3 is a lush rainforest day between Bellevue Chopin and Wotten Waven. Most of the segment is manageable, but River Claire is the key challenge: steep descent, crossing, and finding the trail again. Once you’re back on the correct line after the river, the route becomes much easier to follow toward Morne Prosper and Wotten Waven.
Quick facts
- Difficulty: 7/10
- Duration: 6-7 hours
What you’ll do
- Start from Bellevue Chopin and follow the WNT route through village edges and rainforest.
- Pass through Giraudel, then begin the steep descent to River Claire.
- Cross River Claire (conditions vary; the bridge may be out).
- After crossing, locate the track that climbs up toward Morne Prosper.
- Use this pin for the climb-out point: 15.305896, -61.347123 (track provided by Luca Henderson).
- Continue on the easier-to-follow trail all the way to Wotten Waven.
Key tips
- River Claire is the main navigation and safety point. Don’t underestimate it.
- If you lose the line after crossing, use the climb-out pin: 15.305896, -61.347123.
- Avoid after heavy rain: higher water + slippery descent + harder trail finding.
- Carry an offline GPS track. Do not rely on signage only.
- Start early and keep daylight buffer in case you lose time at the river crossing.
We haven’t explored the full Waitukubuli National Trail yet. A full end-to-end outing is planned during 2026 so we can update our on-the-ground notes (conditions, access, real timings). If you want to prepare an expedition for one segment or multiple segments, please fill out our form and we’ll connect you with guides based on the sections you want to do.
