Intro
Segment 12 is a full-day-style WNT hike from Borne to Penville in the far north. It climbs through farmland areas (Moore Park Estate zone), then pushes up toward the slopes of Morne aux Diables before dropping into Vieille Case and continuing toward Penville. Trail conditions and stats vary a lot across sources, and we haven’t explored this segment yet, so plan it cautiously.
Quick facts
- Difficulty: 8/10
- Duration: 4–7 hours (varies widely with conditions and wayfinding)
- Cost: Trail Pass required for non-residents (confirm current pricing)
What you’ll do
- Start from Borne and begin the steady climb into higher ground.
- Pass through farm areas with open views when the weather clears.
- Continue onto steeper, wetter terrain as you approach Morne aux Diables foothills.
- Descend toward Vieille Case, then follow the route toward Penville.
- Finish in/near Penville and exit to the road for pickup or onward travel.
Key tips
- Expect overgrowth and mud. Long pants help with razor grass and scratchy vegetation.
- Some hikers report searching for the trail line in places. Use an offline GPS track.
- Ropes may be present on steep sections, but treat them as “not guaranteed” and check anchors carefully.
- Avoid after heavy rain. Mud gets worse and route-finding becomes harder.
- Info varies a lot (maintenance, storm impact, reroutes). We’ll update this page as soon as possible.
We haven’t explored the full Waitukubuli National Trail yet. A full end-to-end outing is planned during 2026 so we can update our on-the-ground notes (conditions, access, real timings). If you want to prepare an expedition for one segment or multiple segments, please fill out our form and we’ll connect you with guides based on the sections you want to do.
