Eleventh segment of the WNT.

Intro

Segment 11 runs from Syndicate to Borne and cuts through Morne Diablotin National Park. It’s a full, challenging day with mud, steep climbs, and steep descents. The reward is big views from lookout spots and strong chances of hearing (and sometimes seeing) parrots.

Quick facts

  • Difficulty: 8/10
  • Duration: About 5–7 hours (varies with conditions)
  • Cost: Trail Pass required for non-residents (confirm current pricing)

What you’ll do

  • Start from Syndicate and follow the WNT line into deep forest.
  • Move through wet, slippery sections and rolling terrain that gets steeper later on.
  • Stop at the lookout areas (some hikers report covered picnic spots).
  • Keep listening for parrots in the canopy as you approach higher forest sections.
  • Finish in/near Borne and exit to the road for pickup.

Key tips

  • Expect mud. Even when the trail is “easy at first,” it can turn steep and slick later.
  • Long pants help with razor grass and scratchy vegetation.
  • Downed trees happen. If the trail line disappears briefly, slow down and re-check markers/GPS.
  • Start early to keep a daylight buffer.

We haven’t explored the full Waitukubuli National Trail yet. A full end-to-end outing is planned during 2026 so we can update our on-the-ground notes (conditions, access, real timings). If you want to prepare an expedition for one segment or multiple segments, please fill out our form and we’ll connect you with guides based on the sections you want to do.

Best time

Start early; drier days for less mud; morning/late afternoon for parrot activity

What to bring

Shoes with strong grip, long pants (razor grass/vegetation), water, snacks, offline GPS track, portable charger, gloves (optional)

How to get there

Point-to-point from Syndicate to Borne. Arrange transport at both ends.

Safety

Expect slippery mud, very steep sections, and occasional blowdowns. Wayfinding can slow down where trees have fallen. Take extra care on steep descents and do not attempt in poor weather.
