Intro
Freshwater Lake Trail is a loop hike in Dominica’s highlands, right by Freshwater Lake. It offers viewpoints over the lake and, on clear days, toward the east side of the island. The trail is often very muddy, but it’s a rewarding short hike if you’re prepared.
Quick facts
- Difficulty: 4/10
- Duration: 45–90 min (conditions dependent)
- Cost: Single Site Visit US$8 (EC$21.35) OR Day Pass US$20 (EC$53.40) OR Week Pass US$50 (EC$133.50)
What you’ll do
- Start near Freshwater Lake and join the loop trail.
- Walk through cool montane forest and damp, muddy sections.
- Stop at viewpoints to look over the lake and the east coast (when visibility is good).
- Complete the loop and return to the start point.
Key tips
- Expect mud. Wear shoes with strong grip.
- Avoid going right after heavy rain if you want better footing.
- Go early for the best chance of clear views (clouds roll in fast).
- Bring a light layer. It’s noticeably cooler here than on the coast.
